Warsaw excursions

Jewish sights
on Vistula's
west bank

duration: 3-6 hours

In this excursion are included sights connected to Warsaw’s jewish ghetto, but not solely. Before  the second world war, Warsaw was a city with the biggest jewish community in Europe, followed  only by New York, in terms of size. Throughout the trail we would understand and get the  impression of how the jewish life in Warsaw looked like before, during and after the war.

We will start our mutual way in Grzybowski square and the sights around it – Prozna st., The All saints church and The Nozyk synagogue. Not far away from that point we’ll find a memorial for  Janusz Korczak, one of the most distinctive figures in the chronicles of the ghetto.  Our next stop would be the last standing relic of the Ghetto wall, where we could understand  some figures concerning the everyday life of the people who were forced to live behind those  walls. The ruins of the building in Walicow st. nr. 14 will take us back in time, and there we’ll hear  the story of “The poet of the ghetto” – Wladyslaw Szlengel.

The wooden footbridge – our following point - was standing on the crossroad of Zelazna and  Chlodna streets had a key point role in the passage between the two parts of the ghetto. We’ll  see the monument commemorating this crucial point and realize how it divided the ghetto into  two parts.

We’ll continue for a short tour around the conserved, still operational, Jewish cemetery of  Warsaw. Some famous figures are buried in this sacred place, and some tombstones are worth  seeing.

Our excursion will be summed up in the “Memorial route of Jewish martyrdom and struggle”,  straining from the “Umschlagplatz” to the famous Rapaport memorial for the heroes of the  Warsaw ghetto. Along the path, we’ll encounter names of figures and places relevant to the  ghetto and the uprising that took place in it.
